The Daily Five
To help the children with their reading, spelling and phonics skills we have a program called the Daily Five in first grade. There are five groups set up like stations or centers for your child to go through.
1. Read to self-the children choose their own books and quietly read to themselves.
2. Read to a partner-the children choose their own books and read with a partner.
3. Word Work-the children can use shaving cream on their desk, a container of sugar, or the stamps to spell their spelling words. This helps practice their words without using the normal pencil and paper.
4. Journal-the children write in their journals using: their spelling words in a sentence, the story starter cubes, or a teacher directed topic. This helps with correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling of words.
5. Game-there are file folder games designed to help the children work on certain skills. They may work on these alone, or with a partner.
During these activities I will also be working with students in a small reading group.
